Dandelion...a pesky herb?

"A weed is but an unloved flower"
                                         - Ella Wheeler Wilcox

I have dandelion everywhere on my lawn and have never really paid much attention to them other than when I was a kid. I used to blow all the thistles off and and sometimes make a wish :). After taking these photo's I thought about if there was anything more to this weed?
I had a quick check online and came across a website that mentioned the whole plant is used as a medicinal herb both internally and externally. The freash juice of the dandelion can be applied externally to fight bacteria and help heal wounds as the plant has an antibacterial action. Also, if you place the plant in a paper bag with unripe fruit, the flowers and leaves release ethylene gas, ripening the fruit quickly.
So, next time you look at a dandelion, maybe you won't think 'pesky weed'...

(have fun blowing away the thistles, I still do :)
